If you want to solve a social problem, ask a billionaire.One of the sadder effects of our soaring inequality is the increasing difficulty of setting a public agenda and acting as a society to solve problems through — dare I say it? — our government. A review of a recent book on the lives and activities of the Koch brothers suggested that the book would have been better if it had also addressed the political influence of more liberal-leaning billionaires.

The True Believer

The True Believer Many people have stories of the 2000 presidential election and its protracted aftermath. Mine takes place in an elementary school. Republicans are a majority in our neighborhood. In 2000 they were an overwhelming majority. Most assumed that everyone they encountered agreed with them. ¶ In our family the person who had the most difficult time was our daughter. If she was not the only person in her class whose parents had voted for Gore, she was close to it.

Contempt Is Nothing New for Ted Cruz

According to people who knew Ted Cruz back in the day, he made it known when he started at Harvard Law School that he wanted a study group…consisting only of people who had done well at Ivy League colleges, and not any old Ivy League colleges, just Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. In an institution where snobbery and immaturity were common, Cruz’s attitude was remarkable for its snobbery and immaturity. ¶ That’s what I thought when I read the story in 2013. Now that Cruz is a leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination what he believes about people matters.
